We are Darryl & Sheila Windsor of Windsor Farms. We bought our 20 acre farm in October of 2009 moving our 2 daughters and our small hobby farm of chickens, ducks, cockatiels and 2 Border Collies, Zipper and Buttons from Rainbow Road on Saltspring 14 km to Fulford and haven't looked back since.
Our farm was once part of a 62 acre parcel that was subdivided by our neighbor. Lucky for us we got the chunk that had the 30 year old orchard and grape vines as well as an established garden. After a lot of fencing and tiding we were ready to start planting the garden. Then we decided to put in another garden. Then came the sheep, then the cows, the pigs, the turkeys, learning how to make hay......... It's been a very steep learning curve.
So far in 2012 we have 2 acres of market garden, 8 black and 2 white Romney ewes and Thelma and Louise our momma cows with 2 years of offspring. We also take in all the bottle lambs we can find (shown in the picture above) and because we still didn't have enough to do, we bought 3 bottle jersey calves from Moonstruck Cheese.
We have farm gates sales and participate in the Tuesday Market at Centennial Park. We grow everything as organically as possible but are not certified. The garden is amended with a lot of cow and chicken manure then black plastic is laid and then the started plants grown with soaker hoses for water. Not only does this save the water from evaporating, it tremendously cuts down on the weeding as well as keeps the soil warmer for the plants. As an added bonus, apparently the wild rabbits we have running around don't like the black poly (knock on wood) and have left the gardens alone.
The animals are all grain fed with non GMO feed and only receive antibiotics if and when they truly need them. eg Poor Louise had a prolapsed uterus after a very difficult birth this year and required penicillin for 4 days to prevent any infections. My feelings are that the animals well being is more important than any "organic" labeling but care is taken that any product available is free of antibiotics, wormer or anything else that could possibly be thought of as harmful. We don't sell anything that we won't eat.
Family tree genealogical research services are also available at $300 per tree. Search for your links to the past, to strengthen your ties to the future.
