Happy first day of June, I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the beautiful weather we are having. The first Tuesday Market at Centennial Park is tomorrow from 2 – 6 pm. Britty and I hope to see you there. We are in the same space as last year but we finally broke down and bought a tent!!! It goes well with the new banner. We will have spinach, lettuce, some broccoli, and brocoflower (Romanesco), kale and lots of herbs. There will also be our new dried herb packages and dried beans, lots of jams, jellies and pickles. Unfortunately the soaps and salves are not allowed to be displayed on the table but they are available $5 each for preorder, if you email [email protected] before 11am each Tuesday.
Soaps - Salves -
Lemon poppy seed lavender (for relaxation)
Plain cayenne (for pain, psoriasis, shingles)
Grapefruit dandelion (for dry cracked skins)
Rosehip
Oatmeal honey if I have time tonight to make -
Mint rose petal
Milk chocolate mint fir tip
Orange ginger
Forsythia
Cucumber nettle
Dandelion rose petal
Lavender
The first batch of meat birds is going to the abattoir June 11th and will be available for pickup from the farm June 12th after 530 pm friday.
Pricing for the chickens this year is –
$5/lb for a whole chicken
$5.50 /lb for a whole chicken cut into pieces
$7/lb for pieces (Breasts, thighs, legs, etc)
The incubator just hatched for the third time this spring and the second batch of meat birds and the Thanksgiving turkeys will be picked up from Top Shelf feeds Tuesday afternoon.
The sheep have done well lambing this year and with all the bottle lambs we have 18 lambs growing very quickly next door at Art’s. We also have some bottle goats this year. For those who haven’t tried goat meat or Chevon. It is similar to beef but the size of lamb. Darryl bbq’ed some last week and Britty and I really enjoyed it. (I think it’s better than lamb!!)
The cows have finally finished calving. Mabel had Saturn (girl), then Louise had a little bull calf Jupiter, Thelma had Pluto as Darryl and I were driving onto the ferry to Enderby to pick up the new to us stocktrailer. And last but not least Daisy finally calved last Thursday May 28th a little bull calf, which Britty promptly named Martian. We were all surprised last year when Daisy produced 3 gallons of milk a day and then completely amazed when she produced 5 gallons a day when she got up to speed. This year she is at 7 gallons a day so far. 4 gallons for breakfast and 3 for dinner. Martian is getting 3 gallons of that for now but there is going to be a lot of cheese and soap being made this year.
While researching the different “flavors” of soap, I’ve been learning a lot about wildcrafting. So the new jams/jellies are Rose petal jam and fir tip syrup and jelly.
We still haven’t built the rabbit cages but they will hopefully happen before the end of the year. I have made a deal with the local abattoir to collect 10 sheepskins a month so I should be able to keep Elderberry Yarns supplied with lots of tanned sheep skins, they also sell our soaps and salves there.
See you at the market tomorrow
